Beginning January 1st the Ontario government is providing 10 per cent off residential electricity bills through the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit. Strong new rules and safeguards will also protect Ontarians from unfair practices by energy retailers. An average household can expect to save
approximately $150 each year through the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit.
As part of Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan, the government is upgrading and modernizing
Ontario’s energy infrastructure to provide reliable power to homes and businesses.
The benefit is also designed to offset the rising electricity rates. The Ministry of Energy estimates that residential hydro bills will rise 3.5 per cent year over year for the next 20 years.
Also starting January 1, all energy retailers are required to follow strong new rules under the
Energy Consumer Protection Act. This includes offering a comparison of a contract price to the price offered by the local utility company. The new rules will ensure consumers receive accurate information from energy retailers before signing a contract, and will limit consumer penalties
